
This was the question I set out to answer in my PhD. I scoured the vast literature and compiled, analyzed, and reviewed all available models and definitions of self-awareness. This knowledge was used for the creation of a model, definition, and measure of self-awareness. There were some interesting facts about self-awareness that I discovered. Although the term "self-awareness" implies that it is only about the "self", it is actually about other people as well as the self. There is no way to truly know yourself without the other. Six processes are involved in self-awareness. Each of these is very important to increase self-awareness.
* Being able to remain in the moment.
* Don't be too critical of yourself
* Being able to see what is going on for others;
* Being aware of what other people think about you
* The ability to connect with others.
In an effort to capture all the different aspects of self-awareness, I created a definition. Self-awareness refers to being sensitive to and responsive to the feedback generated by the self-system as well as externally-oriented systems. This definition is very academic, but it highlights important aspects of self-awareness. First, self-awareness can be a continuous process. We are not always fully self-aware. It is something we must strive to improve on, and it is something that we need openly to. It also highlights the need for balance between oneself, the environment, and other people. Balance also means being with yourself - not too easy, not too gentle. These are the very things that people struggle with.
This model and my definition of self-awareness led me to create a method to measure self-awareness in my PhD. This new measure was validated and refined after many years of research involving thousands. It is composed of 60 questions, which can be answered using a seven-point scale ranging from "almost always" to "almost never". This is the first global measure of self-awareness. This is the first step towards becoming more aware of your strengths and weaknesses.
